May 29, 2026 at 9:17 AMThe updated report „Fuel for Thought: LPG“ by Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the World Liquid Gas Association (WLGA) highlights the role of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a viable solution for reducing emissions in the maritime sector. The report indicates that LPG represents an immediately deployable and scalable fuel alternative that is already being utilized in shipping, as stated by the company.
According to LR, there are over 1,600 LPG tankers operating worldwide, supported by a mature global supply chain that includes more than 1,000 storage facilities and terminals. This infrastructure enables LPG to be a credible option for lower-emission shipping. The report emphasizes that LPG is not only technologically proven but also widely available, making it an attractive fuel for the industry.
Environmental benefits of liquefied gas
The use of LPG offers significant environmental advantages compared to conventional ship fuels, according to LR: the fuel emits about 97% less sulfur oxides, 90% less particulate matter, and around 20% less carbon dioxide than heavy fuel oil. Furthermore, the report states that greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 17% over the entire lifecycle compared to marine diesel.
