Amazon is building a distribution center in Ensisheim
Apr 16, 2026 at 1:44 PMUPS announced the introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in its U.S. package network on April 14, 2026. This technology aims to provide customers with enhanced visibility and reliability in package tracking. The RFID technology is now integrated into all UPS delivery vehicles in the U.S., in the company’s distribution centers, and on every package shipped from over 5,500 UPS Store® locations.
With this comprehensive rollout of RFID technology, UPS claims to be the first major logistics provider to widely implement this technology in an integrated network, having already invested over $100 million in the development and implementation of this technology.
Improved package tracking and transparency
Matt Guffey, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer of UPS, stated, „We are enabling our customers to monitor their supply chains in real-time with RFID, resulting in precise tracking, faster insights, and a smarter network.“ He described the introduction of RFID technology as the most significant advancement in visibility in the last ten years at UPS and across the industry.
Scanning technology has been standard in the logistics industry since the early 1990s, with UPS taking a pioneering role by placing scanning capabilities directly in the hands of drivers. By shifting from scanning to sensing, the company aims to provide customers with improved service through technological innovations.
Guffey added that by integrating RFID into labels, vehicles, and loading areas, customers gain clear visibility throughout the entire shipping process—from pickup to delivery—without the need for manual scanning. This leads to a smarter and more predictable commerce.
Managing complexity in the background
The RFID technology offers UPS customers significant advantages without requiring them to become technological experts or invest in new systems. UPS manages the complex processes in the background, making enhanced visibility simple and accessible.
The RFID pickup sensors confirm that packages have been picked up and are in UPS’s possession. This assurance cannot be provided by any other provider in its U.S. network. Additionally, packages are automatically tracked as they move through the network, giving customers greater transparency regarding the location and progress of their shipments. With better data, UPS can respond more quickly to changes, such as weather conditions or other unforeseen events.
The RFID technology is used daily at UPS and supports millions of packages, providing customers with comprehensive insights into their shipments.
