Emilia-Romagna: Four partners establish “ROLER”
May 13, 2026 at 1:08 PMThe northern English port operator PD Ports has enhanced its operations at Teesport by acquiring a third LPS 550 portal crane with electric drive. The new crane from Liebherr’s Rostock plant complements two cranes that were already put into operation in 2023 and is expected to increase efficiency in handling bulk cargo. Teesport is one of the largest ports in the United Kingdom and plays a central role in the regional economy, handling approximately 26 to 28 million tons of cargo annually.
Expansion of bulk handling capacity
The LPS 550 is characterized by its electric drive systems and precise technology, which ensure consistent performance. The crane’s design allows for precise gripping operations, which is advantageous for operators when bulk carriers dock at the quay. The new crane will be specifically used for bulk loading and is intended to enhance flexibility at the quay during peak times. With a lifting capacity of 144 tons, the crane can also handle heavier loads, thus supporting the processing of mixed cargo operations.
Grant Honzik, Business Unit Director – Bulks at PD Ports, stated: “This investment aims to strengthen the resilience and capacity of our bulk operations at Teesport in the long term. The performance and reliability of the existing Liebherr cranes have proven themselves daily, and the addition of a third LPS 550 gives us more flexibility at the quay and more room during peak times.”
Sustainability and efficiency in focus
The electric drives of the LPS 550 enable smooth and precise movement, helping operators maintain consistent performance over long shifts. The crane operates exclusively on shore power, eliminating the use of fossil fuels and promoting efficient, environmentally friendly operations. The crane’s design provides ample space for trucks and rail vehicles, optimizing Teesport’s connections to the roads via the A66 and A19.
The sales and service teams at Liebherr Great Britain ensure quick access to spare parts and on-site support, with maintenance scheduled around the arrival times of ships and trains. This helps protect turnaround times and minimize disruptions in daily port operations.
Gavin Robinson, Crane Electrical Manager at PD Ports, expressed positive feedback about the previous LPS 550 cranes: “The two previous LPS 550 cranes have proven to be very successful in terms of the volumes handled and reliability.”
David Vaughan, Divisional Manager Maritime & Port Equipment at Liebherr Great Britain, emphasized the long-standing partnership with PD Ports and the ongoing satisfaction with the products and services provided.
With the expansion of the crane fleet, Teesport is well-positioned for future growth, and the LPS crane series is designed to support this development.
