May 13, 2026 at 1:26 PMInterporto Bologna SpA has positioned itself as a founding member of the new logistics network initiative ROLER – Rete Operatori Logistica Emilia-Romagna. This network brings together four logistics companies from Emilia-Romagna to promote freight transport by rail. In addition to Interporto Bologna SpA, the founders include Dinazzano Po SpA, SAPIR SpA, and Rail Traction Company SpA.
The initiative aims to double rail transport volumes in Emilia-Romagna. In recent years, there has been a decline in rail traffic flows to regional terminals, decreasing from 21.8 million tons in 2022 to 19.2 million tons in 2024. This occurs within a national context where freight transport by rail has decreased by 3.7% overall in 2025.
Synergies and competitiveness
The network agreement foresees enhanced collaboration among the participating companies, each possessing specific competencies in intermodal transport. The goal is to offer unified and more competitive services for local businesses. ROLER aims to position Emilia-Romagna as a strategic hub between Central Europe and the ports of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas. This will be supported through joint commercial activities and a structured dialogue with regional institutions as well as the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Centro Settentrionale.
Interporto Bologna plays a central role in this endeavor. The companies based there generate revenues of over 1.5 billion EUR and create approximately 11,970 jobs, including 6,970 direct and indirect positions, as well as 5,000 truck drivers daily. This underscores the importance of logistics for the economic structure of the region.
Stefano Caliandro, President of Interporto Bologna SpA, emphasizes: “This network agreement is a concrete step towards promoting intermodality in Emilia-Romagna. Given the national decline in freight transport by rail in 2025, this alliance is a forward-looking decision: it strengthens connections to the port of Ravenna and the Brenner and paves the way for the new terminal in 2027, which will feature five tracks of 750 meters and two portal cranes.”
The establishment of ROLER is part of a medium- to long-term perspective that also considers ongoing infrastructure investments. The new terminal planned for 2027 will represent a significant qualitative improvement in the operational capacity of Interporto and the entire logistics chain in the region. With ROLER, Interporto Bologna reaffirms its commitment to a more efficient, integrated, and sustainable logistics system that benefits businesses and the competitiveness of Emilia-Romagna.
