Detlef Schaefer has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Challenge Handling, a cargo handler operating at Liège Airport (Belgium) under the Challenge Group. With extensive international experience in aviation, airport operations, and ground handling, he brings a combination of operational expertise, strategic vision, and leadership skills to his new role.
Throughout his career, Schaefer has built a proven track record in operational management and strategic development in complex aviation environments. His appointment reflects Challenge Handling’s commitment to strengthening its position as a reliable partner in handling while adapting to the needs of customers and the industry.
Focus on collaboration and strategic alignment
At the beginning of his tenure, Schaefer will prioritize building strong relationships with his teams, customers, partners, regulators, as well as the airport community and stakeholders within the Challenge Group. In a statement, he expressed:
“My first priority will be to get to know the people at Challenge Handling and our key stakeholders, understand our operations, and ensure that we align on clear operational, strategic, and financial priorities. Together, we will build a strong foundation for the future while delivering the quality of service our customers expect.”
Schaefer will work closely with the group’s leadership team to support the further development of Challenge Handling’s operations in Liège and shape the next growth phase of the company.
To ensure a smooth transition, David Alexis will continue to support the company until the end of November 2026. During this transition period, he and Schaefer will work closely together to ensure continuity for customers, employees, partners, regulators, and all stakeholders. Alexis has played a key role in the development and growth of Challenge Handling over the past two decades and will actively contribute to the successful handover of responsibilities and the continued success of the company.
