Cross-border freight volume in the US increases
Jun 26, 2026 at 7:49 AMOn July 1, 2026, Patrick Zilles (l.) will take over the leadership of the Strategic Product Management Intermodal division at HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH (HGK LI). With this personnel decision, the company based in Cologne aims to expand its competencies in intermodal transport and drive the strategic development of its container and network business.
Zilles‘ appointment is part of a transformation program of the HGK Group, which aims to better connect the four container terminals on the Rhine in Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Cologne, and Duisburg. The goal is to further develop these as an integrated service network. Structures, processes, and offerings are to be harmonized and digitized across locations to meet the demands of modern supply chains.
Markus Krämer (r.), CEO of HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH, expressed positive sentiments about Zilles‘ appointment: “With Patrick Zilles, we gain a recognized expert in the intermodal market. He will help us further develop the terminal and network structures and adapt our service offerings to future market requirements.”
Focus on digital processes and trimodal transport
A central aspect of the strategy is the expansion of digital processes and the coordination of trimodal transport, which includes inland shipping, rail, and trucking. The company aims to provide integrated container solutions for industry, trade, logistics companies, and shipping lines to strengthen sustainable transport chains in European hinterland traffic.
Zilles brings over 20 years of international experience in intermodal transport, rail freight, and logistics. Most recently, he was responsible for global rail and intermodal activities at DFDS, successfully developing this area to sustainable profitability. Previously, he founded an intermodal operator and led it until its acquisition by DFDS. Other stations in his career include leadership positions at companies such as Samskip, TX Logistik, Kühne + Nagel, and DB Schenker.
“The HGK Logistics and Intermodal, with its locations along the Rhine and proximity to significant economic regions, has excellent conditions for further growth,” Zilles stated. He emphasized that it is particularly appealing for him to connect the strengths of the locations into an integrated, customer-oriented network and to leverage the opportunities of shifting transport to rail and inland shipping.
In his new role, Zilles will drive the further development of the terminal and network structures. With this personnel decision, HGK Logistics and Intermodal intends to further strengthen its position in the growing intermodal market.
