Jul 13, 2021 at 5:45 PMFrankfurt Airport (Fraport) continues its slow recovery. The upward trend in passenger numbers continued in June despite the ongoing significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cargo volumes also recorded a significant increase once again. FRA strengthens its role as a leading cargo hub in Europe.
(Frankfurt/Main) Frankfurt Airport counted around 1.78 million passengers. This represents an increase of almost 200 percent compared to June 2020. However, the previous year’s month had a low comparison value, as air traffic had collapsed significantly last year due to rising infection numbers.
In the reporting month, the declining incidence rates and lifted travel warnings had a positive effect on demand once again. For the first time since the beginning of the crisis, more than 80,000 passengers traveled through Frankfurt Airport on two days in June.
Compared to June 2019, Frankfurt Airport recorded a significant decline in passenger volume of 73.0 percent1 in the reporting month. Cumulatively, the passenger volume for the first half of 2021 was around 6.5 million passengers. This corresponds to a decrease of 46.6 percent compared to the same period in 2020 and 80.7 percent compared to 2019.
Air Cargo Increases Despite Lack of Capacity
In contrast, cargo volume increased by 30.6 percent to 190,131 tons despite the continued lack of capacity from belly cargo in passenger aircraft, reaching the second-highest value for a June. This represents an increase of 9.0 percent compared to June 2019. Thus, Frankfurt Airport reinforces its role as a leading cargo hub in Europe. The number of flight movements increased by over 114 percent compared to 2020, totaling 20,010 takeoffs and landings. The total maximum takeoff weights grew by 78.9 percent to around 1.36 million tons.
International group airports also recorded significant increases in the reporting month, some by several hundred percent, although compared to the severely collapsed passenger numbers in June 2020. Compared to June 2019, passenger numbers in the international portfolio remained significantly lower.
Volume Increases at Fraport Airports Abroad
The airport in Ljubljana, Slovenia, recorded 27,953 passengers in the reporting month. At the Brazilian airports in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre, passenger volume rose to 608,088 passengers. The airport in Lima (Peru) recorded 806,617 passengers in June.
Passenger volume at the 14 Greek regional airports increased to around 1.5 million passengers. At the Bulgarian Twin Star airports, the volume rose to 158,306 passengers. Antalya Airport in Turkey recorded an increase to around 1.7 million passengers. Passenger volume at St. Petersburg Airport in Russia grew to around 1.9 million passengers. Xi’an Airport in China noted an increase of 31.8 percent to around 3.5 million passengers.
Thus, Antalya Airport and the Greek airports counted about as many passengers in June as Frankfurt, while Xi’an Airport had double the number of passengers. This demonstrates the dynamic development of passenger numbers in Fraport’s international airport portfolio.
