Jul 9, 2026 at 7:27 AMThe Finnish marine propulsion expert Steerprop has received a new order from the Turkish shipyard group Med Marine. This includes two „SP 175 T“ engines for the third vessel in a series of tugs. The agreement follows a similar delivery for the first two ships, which are set to be commissioned in 2024. These tugs are the first to be equipped with the Steerprop T-series propulsors developed for the high-performance market, as stated by Steerprop.
The drives will be installed on a harbor tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. The operator of the vessel is currently unknown. According to the manufacturer, the design of the drives has been developed to meet the requirements for thrust, efficiency, flexibility, and reliability of tug operators. It also takes into account the integration requirements of the shipyard, focusing on modularity and scalability. The validation by Med Marine, which has its own fleet of tugs and a tugboat shipyard, is seen by the company as strong support for this solution.
Kimmo Lainio, Sales Director for Steerprop Tugs & Workboats, comments on the order as follows: “The Steerprop T-series meets the tug segment’s demand for powerful and agile drives that can be cost-effectively installed on several compact, high-performance vessels. After two years of successful operation on the first ships of the series, this repeated order from one of the world’s leading tug builders demonstrates the strength of this concept.”
