The Port Authority of Antwerp-Bruges has undergone a leadership change. Jacques Vandermeiren (right), who has served as CEO since January 2017, will step down from his position. This move is part of a strategic realignment of the Belgian port, focusing on cost efficiency and sustainable value creation. The decision to appoint a new CEO aims to ensure that the new strategy can be implemented consistently from the outset.
Vandermeiren will be temporarily replaced by Rob Smeets (left), the current COO, until a new CEO is appointed. Smeets will ensure the continuity of corporate policy as well as daily operations.
Recognition of previous achievements
Johan Klaps, Chairman of the Board, expressed appreciation for Vandermeiren’s achievements over the past years. Under his leadership, the port’s position on the global map has been strengthened. Significant progress has also been made in the areas of innovation and environmental friendliness. Klaps particularly highlighted the successful implementation of the merger between the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge, which is regarded as a historic step for the organization. The entire Board thanked Vandermeiren for his commitment and wished him all the best for the future.
Vandermeiren himself stated that it is time for a new era, both for the company and for him personally. He emphasized that working at the port has always been close to his heart and that he is proud of the developments achieved together with the team.
Smeets, who is temporarily taking on the role of CEO, thanked Vandermeiren for his inspiring leadership and emphasized that he will fully commit to ensuring the continuity of the company and addressing the concerns of employees and customers.
