Opportunities and risks of AI in customs
Apr 14, 2026 at 9:21 AMThe Air Algérie Group and the Algiers Airport Services and Infrastructure Management Company (SGSIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a modern air freight hub. This project aims to enhance logistical efficiency and support economic development in the country.
The agreement was signed by Hamza Benhamouda (right), CEO of Air Algérie, and Mokhtar Said Mediouni, CEO of SGSIA. High-ranking representatives from the Algerian economy were also present, including the CEO of Sonatrach and the Director General of the Customs Authority.
Project details
The hub, managed by Air Algérie Cargo, will be located in the southeastern area of the airport. The renovation of Terminal 3, covering an area of 10,530 m² and a storage capacity of 25,500 m³, is planned. The hub will include dedicated zones for import and export operations, as well as modern warehouses and cold storage facilities. Completion is expected within twelve months.
Benhamouda emphasized that the project supports national efforts to diversify the economy and contributes to activating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). “The development of the air freight hub represents a qualitative change,” he stated. The project follows a self-financing model with a 30-year operating contract.
Focus on international markets
The hub is expected to accelerate processes and significantly increase capacity. Forecasts indicate that freight volume will rise from approximately 19,000 tons in 2023 to over 65,000 tons by 2029. To support this growth, Air Algérie will retrofit five aircraft for freight operations.
Benhamouda also announced that a strategic partnership between Air Algérie Cargo and Ethiopian Airlines is set to be signed soon to optimize network utilization on the continent. Mediouni emphasized that the hub meets the highest international standards and integrates advanced digital technologies. Abdelkader Salmi, Director General of Air Algérie Cargo, stated that the center will transform Algiers Airport into a “regional logistics platform” capable of attracting global trade flows, particularly towards African markets such as Nouakchott (Mauritania), Dakar (Senegal), and N’Djamena (Chad). Just under a month ago, Air Algérie Cargo served Niamey, the capital of Niger.
