Perhaps the two major German cities will soon have direct air connections with the Middle Eastern hub Dubai. The airline Emirates, based there, announced on June 9 plans to introduce daily scheduled flights to Berlin and Stuttgart. For these new connections, it intends to invest more than 100 million EUR annually in operating and personnel costs, airport fees, fuel, and other expenses. However, approval from the Federal Ministry of Transport is still pending.
Economic significance for the metropolitan regions
Berlin, as the political center of Germany, has a population of 3.9 million and is known for its dynamic start-up landscape and vibrant cultural scene. Despite these characteristics, the city’s international connectivity is inadequate, as over 85% of the connections from Berlin Brandenburg Airport are within Europe. Stuttgart, the center of the Baden-Württemberg economy, faces similar challenges. The region relies on long-haul connections to meet the needs of manufacturers and trading partners.
Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, emphasized that the carrier is ready to connect both cities with its extensive route network. He pointed to the existing demand for long-haul flights, which has also been recognized by the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Emirates already offers connections to 50 destinations in Africa, the Near and Middle East, and Southeast Asia that are not served by German airlines.
Job creation and improvement of freight connectivity
The introduction of the new connections could create hundreds of jobs. A study by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) from 2012 estimated that a daily Emirates flight to Berlin and Stuttgart could generate nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. This estimate remains largely valid today.
Particularly noteworthy is the improvement in freight connectivity. A daily flight with a wide-body aircraft of the type Boeing 777-300ER could provide over 280 tons of lower deck freight capacity per week. This would create a new channel for time-sensitive imports and exports and enhance the competitiveness of regional companies. Efficient freight logistics are crucial for the industry in Baden-Württemberg and Berlin, especially for the technology and automotive sectors.
