Customs secures eight tons of cocaine in Wilhelmshaven
Jun 3, 2026 at 12:07 PMThe Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) in the Port of Melbourne has recently put four new Kalmar hybrid automated container handlers (ACC) into operation. These are part of an expansion program aimed at increasing the terminal’s annual capacity to over 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The integration of the new ACCs is also expected to contribute to a more efficient and sustainable operation of the terminal, according to VICT.
Technology to enhance efficiency
The new container handlers have been developed, according to the terminal, to boost productivity by minimizing loading times. The hybrid ACCs have a lifting capacity of up to 60 tons and are equipped with lithium-ion battery systems. This technology allows for energy recovery during operation, which, according to the manufacturer, leads to a 40 percent increase in energy efficiency. Additionally, an annual reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 50 tons is anticipated. The handover of the new vehicles took place on May 26, attended by Sami Niiranen, President and CEO of Kalmar, as well as the management and operational staff of VICT.
„This investment reflects our commitment to expanding terminal capacity, enhancing efficiency, and introducing technologies that reduce the environmental impact of our operations.“
– Bruno Porchietto, CEO of VICT
