On behalf of GEA Brewery Systems, 25 large tank systems were transported from Kitzingen in Bavaria via Rotterdam and Londonderry to the Northern Irish Bushmills. The entire project weighs 4,000 tons, with individual pieces weighing up to 22 tons, measuring 17.50 m in length and 5.15 m in height.
(Holzwickede) Rhenus Project Logistics, a specialist in complex project transports, is currently executing the elaborate shipping of around 25 large tank systems along with equipment from Kitzingen to the Northern Irish whiskey distillery Old Bushmills Distillery, which is set to be expanded. A large portion of the approximately 4,000 freight tons has already arrived at the Northern Irish port of Londonderry and is now being gradually transported to the distillery’s construction site, located 60 kilometers away.
Project duration from August 2020 to approximately February 2021

Bushmills is the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery
The project started on August 12 with the loading of special trailers at the GEA plant in Kitzingen. In addition to sensitive steel tanks, the transported goods also included energy storage systems, electrical components, fasteners, and pipelines.
At the port of Kitzingen, the cargo was carefully loaded onto an inland vessel and transported to the Rhenus Deep Sea Terminal Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. About six weeks later, a second project phase commenced. From Rotterdam, Rhenus Maritime Services, a charterer and shipping company for short-sea traffic, organized the further shipping via breakbulk vessel to Londonderry. Here, Rhenus Project Logistics took over the coordination of the follow-up transport.
Development of a feasibility analysis
“Not every logistics service provider can carry out special transports professionally. The transport concept, the detailed development of the feasibility analysis, and the extensive preparations were decisive for Rhenus Project Logistics. The implementation went extraordinarily well despite challenges such as the Corona pandemic,” summarizes Andreas Holleber, site manager at GEA Brewery Systems in Kitzingen.
Individual pieces are heavy, long, and tall
The facility components, weighing up to 22 tons, measuring 17.50 meters in length and 5.15 meters in height, required not only sensitive handling and careful packaging but also a coordinated transport planning: “The choice of a suitable port as well as the pre- and post-transport were particularly challenging. Due to the height of some cargo pieces, the routing had to be planned and measured in detail, and road closures and brief power interruptions had to be coordinated with local authorities,” reports Yvonne Nikolaus, project manager of Rhenus Project Logistics. The final delivery of GEA equipment for the Old Bushmills Distillery is scheduled for February 2021.
