The Day of the Seafarer is celebrated annually on June 25 worldwide and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the important role of seafarers in global trade. This year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is focusing on the challenges faced by seafarers in conflict-affected regions. The current geopolitical situation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and the Red Sea, has intensified the risks that seafarers face daily, according to the IMO.
Challenges and risks for seafarers
The IMO emphasizes that seafarers often have to operate in unsafe and dangerous waters. The campaign for the Day of the Seafarer carries the motto „Leading World Trade. Bearing the Risks“ and aims to remind that seafarers must not become collateral victims of geopolitical conflicts. The IMO is working with member states and the industry to evacuate seafarers and stranded ships in affected regions.
Voices of seafarers in focus
A central element of this year’s campaign, according to the IMO, is the personal accounts of seafarers sharing their experiences in high-risk areas. These accounts provide insights into the challenges seafarers face when navigating conflict zones, such as the Strait of Hormuz. The IMO encourages amplifying the voices of seafarers and raising awareness of their needs and challenges.
