Jun 10, 2026 at 7:40 AMQatar Airways Cargo is committed to enhancing safety in the transport of lithium batteries through strategic initiatives. A significant step in this endeavor was the attainment of the CEIV Lithium Batteries (Li-batt) certification in 2023, which applies to both Qatar Airways and Qatar Aviation Services (QAS). The airline recognizes the substantial risks associated with the air freight transport of lithium batteries and views the CEIV Li-batt certification not only as a regulatory achievement but also as an opportunity to drive change in the industry.
Leadership role in risk mitigation in lithium battery transport
As a leading air freight provider, Qatar Airways Cargo continuously defines and promotes best practices. The airline actively participates in working groups and collaborates with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and other global stakeholders to elevate industry standards. Additionally, it invests significantly in training its employees to ensure they are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge in handling hazardous materials.
In response to the rising demand for devices with lithium batteries and the growth of e-commerce, Qatar Airways Cargo has reacted to the increasing volumes of risky shipments with comprehensive safety measures. In 2021, the entire fleet of Unit Load Devices (ULD) was upgraded by introducing advanced fire protection covers and fire-resistant containers. The commitment extends throughout the supply chain, as the airline promotes education and awareness to protect every link in the logistics of lithium batteries.
Results: reduction of incidents and increase in shipments
Between 2022 and 2025, Qatar Airways Cargo achieved a 20% reduction in irregularities and incidents related to lithium batteries. This confirms the airline’s role as an industry leader in the safe and reliable transport of lithium batteries. The CEIV Li-batt certification validated that the airline’s procedures, training, and infrastructure not only met international standards but exceeded them, driving further improvements in safety and operational excellence.
The certification process fostered a safety culture that emphasizes vigilance and accountability, ensuring continuous improvements. By standardizing procedures, the airline achieved flawless consistency in handling shipments and strengthened coordination among all supply chain participants. Regular training increased employee confidence and expertise, minimized errors, and improved operational efficiency. Optimized documentation and processes accelerated processing times and enhanced customer satisfaction, further underscoring Qatar Airways Cargo’s commitment to empowering its employees and partners.
The CEIV Li-batt certification propelled Qatar Airways Cargo to new heights in the lithium battery shipping market. This led to an increase in shipping volumes from existing customers and attracted new clients seeking a recognized industry leader. The certification strengthened trust and partnerships, while process improvements enabled unprecedented speed and agility. Enhanced collaboration, standardized procedures, and ongoing training boosted employee morale and confidence.
