May 21, 2026 at 8:41 AMDHL has transported freight for Formula 1 in North America by rail for the first time. For the pilot project around 50 containers with racing equipment were transported over nearly 2,000 km from Miami FL (USA) to Montreal (Canada). About two thirds of the freight usually transported by truck on this route was shifted to the railways.
The delivery included no fewer than 46 high-cube containers as well as four teu. According to DHL, this helped reduce emissions without jeopardising the tight schedule of the car-racing series. During transport, the containers were monitored with tracking devices and shock sensors to ensure safety and timely arrival.
The project is part of the joint strategy of DHL and Formula 1 to reduce emissions overall. In addition to rail transport, the logistics provider already relies on sustainable aviation fuels, biofuel trucks and optimised route planning. DHL and Formula 1 are now examining whether rail transport in North America can be expanded for the 2027 season.
