UAE purchases Brazilian transport aircraft
May 13, 2026 at 11:05 AMThe maritime technology companies Awake.AI from Helsinki (Finland) and Tidalis from Delft (Netherlands) have announced a partnership focused on monitoring and reporting emissions in ports and shipping companies. This collaboration comes against the backdrop of increasing European and international regulations aimed at reducing ship emissions. The goal is to link operational data from port calls with existing maritime operating systems to support automated emissions reporting.
Awake.AI will provide its emissions monitoring software in combination with the traffic services and port management systems of Tidalis, which are used worldwide by ports, coast guards, and maritime authorities. Given the growing reporting obligations related to the FuelEU Maritime regulations, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and the decarbonization goals of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), shipping companies and ports are under pressure to transparently document their emissions.
Integration of operational data for emissions reporting
As part of the agreement, Awake.AI’s Emission Monitor will be combined with the operational data from Tidalis systems. This will convert data on port calls, ships, bunkering, cargo handling, shore power, and gate events into automated reports on emissions from categories 1 to 3. This system enables ports, terminals, and shipping companies to monitor and manage emissions data across their operations. The aim is to reduce manual reporting processes and increase emissions transparency.
Karno Tenovuo, CEO of Awake.AI, emphasizes the importance of data utilization: “Ports already manage large amounts of operational data from ships daily. You cannot decarbonize what you cannot measure. The challenge is to convert this data into reliable and verifiable emissions reports that serve both regulatory compliance and operational decision-making.” The first implementations are expected to take place this year in European ports to meet the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Geert-Jan den Besten (photo), CEO of Tidalis, highlights that ports are increasingly looking for practical ways to improve emissions transparency while maintaining efficient operations. “We are proud to collaborate with Awake.AI. Their expertise is a valuable addition to Tidalis‘ global network and the trust our customers place in us daily,” says den Besten.
The companies plan to initially focus their collaboration on European ports and maritime authorities, followed by projects in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and America in 2026 and 2027.
Shipping accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while more than 80% of world trade is transported by sea. The increasing regulatory pressure, including the extension of the EU ETS to ship emissions and the decarbonization goals of the IMO, intensifies the need for more transparent emissions reporting in the maritime sector.
Tidalis supports maritime operations for ports and authorities worldwide, while Awake.AI develops technologies for optimizing voyages and emissions reporting for ship and port operations.
