May 8, 2026 at 10:21 AMUS Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, in collaboration with the Maritime Administration (MARAD), has launched an initiative focused on the development of small modular reactors (SMR) for commercial shipping. The goal of this initiative is to reduce costs in the maritime sector and promote energy independence in the United States, as stated by the Department of Transportation. MARAD is calling on innovators and industry representatives to participate in the development of an SMR model.
Focus on costs
This Request for Information (RFI) aims to gather input from the industry. A central concern is the use of energy sources that will enable commercial vessels to cover longer distances more quickly. Additionally, the initiative seeks to largely eliminate fuel costs through the use of small modular reactors and reduce maintenance efforts. Another aspect of the initiative is to strengthen national security. By improving American supply chains and securing energy independence, national defense is expected to be enhanced.
