Jun 24, 2026 at 6:58 AMThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) has presented an evacuation plan for the Strait of Hormuz, developed in response to the current situation in the region. According to a spokesperson for the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the safe evacuation of the approximately 11,000 seafarers stranded in the region since the end of February remains a top priority.
The ICS emphasizes that successful implementation of the evacuation plan requires close cooperation between the IMO, the coastal states, and the maritime industry. The ICS spokesperson described the evacuation plan as a positive development aimed at promoting the necessary coordination. However, it is important that this plan aligns with existing mechanisms and does not conflict with them. The ICS will continue to work with the IMO and other industry partners to ensure the safety of the vessels wishing to leave the region.
