Climate adaptation strengthens port of Strasbourg and Upper Rhine ports
Apr 27, 2026 at 9:18 AMBefore the upcoming meeting of the Committee on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Clean Shipping Coalition has acknowledged the progress made during an intersessional meeting. The coalition urges member states to resist efforts that could jeopardize the IMO’s Net Zero Framework (NZF), as it states. This meeting, taking place from April 27 to May 1, 2026, is considered crucial for the future direction of international shipping.
Calls for accelerating action
The Clean Shipping Coalition also demands that the participants of the meeting advance the revision of the energy efficiency measure known as the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). This measure is part of efforts to regulate emissions in the newly established North East Atlantic Emission Control Area. Another focus is on combating the impacts of plastic marine debris.
The IMO’s Net Zero Framework aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. It is based on the 2023 greenhouse gas strategy and includes a global fuel standard (GFS). This standard requires ships to gradually reduce pollution from their fuels.
