Jun 12, 2026 at 9:08 AMThe Deputy Minister for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Stefanos Gkikas (right), visited ThPA S.A. at the Port of Thessaloniki on June 11, 2026. This visit was part of a series of meetings held by a government delegation with institutional and economic representatives in Central Macedonia. Gkikas was welcomed by Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, the CEO of ThPA S.A., along with other executives of the company.
During the meeting, the management of ThPA S.A. presented the minister with the long-term investment program aimed at transforming the Port of Thessaloniki into a modern, competitive, and sustainable hub for intermodal transport and tourism in Southeast Europe. The project for the expansion of Pier 6 was particularly emphasized, as it is considered an absolute priority in ThPA S.A.’s development plan and is crucial for the development of Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, and the national economy. This project is expected to significantly increase the port’s capacity and create the conditions for Thessaloniki to play an even stronger role in connecting markets in the Balkans and Central Europe.
Visit to the Coast Guard and construction site tour
During his visit, Gkikas had the opportunity to tour the Hellenic Coast Guard and visit the distinctive PAEGA building. He also spoke with employees of Deloitte and inspected the construction site of Pier 6, where he expressed his appreciation for the progress of the construction work.
The discussions also focused on the necessity of completing the important projects to connect Pier 6 to the national networks. Furthermore, the current operating conditions affecting the efficiency of the country’s largest conventional port and a port with a strong export orientation were addressed.
Gkikas expressed satisfaction with the development progress of ThPA S.A. and emphasized the importance of the Port of Thessaloniki as a strategic gateway for trade and transport in the country. He highlighted that the port is crucial for strengthening regional development, internationalization, and the supply chain.
Dr. Tsaras, for his part, thanked Gkikas for the visit and the constructive collaboration with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy. He emphasized that this collaboration is a key factor for the implementation of the necessary infrastructure and the creation of a modern port environment with high standards. In conclusion, he reaffirmed ThPA S.A.’s commitment to the continuous improvement of the infrastructure, equipment, and services at the Port of Thessaloniki to create added value for the port’s users and partners as well as for Northern Greece.
