Damen builds dredger for British ports
Apr 24, 2026 at 7:24 AMThe handling of maritime goods at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges recorded a decline of 3.2% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. A total of 65.5 million tons of goods were handled. The figures indicate that the port faced challenges in the first two months of the year, but a recovery was evident in March, according to the port. The overall decline in throughput is primarily attributed to pressure in the breakbulk segment, which decreased by 4.4%. According to the port, container shipping and conventional breakbulk goods were particularly affected. In contrast, bulk traffic remained relatively stable with a slight decline of 0.6%, while RoRo traffic increased.
The reasons for the declining figures are manifold. According to the port, unfavorable weather conditions, labor actions, and geopolitical tensions are significant factors that have impacted the volumes. Despite these challenges, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges continues to invest in projects aimed at enhancing its international appeal and leadership role.
