Jun 11, 2026 at 12:35 PMThe Port Authority of Barcelona today signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission (SMTC) and the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG). This step took place during a visit by a delegation from Shanghai, aimed at reaffirming the close collaboration between the two port infrastructures. The contract was signed by José Alberto Carbonell (2nd from left), President of the Port of Barcelona, Xiao Hui (far left), General Director of the SMTC, and Yang ZhiYong (far right), Vice President of the SIPG. Jaume Duch (2nd from right), Regional Minister for the European Union and Foreign Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia, was also present at the ceremony.
Fields of cooperation and objectives
The new agreement formalizes the existing „sister ports“ relationship between Shanghai and Barcelona and aims to intensify cooperation in several areas. These include the digitization and security of port operations, the development of environmentally friendly ports, and alternative fuels. Additionally, intermodality is promoted to establish sustainable maritime corridors between the Far East and the Mediterranean.
Relations between the Port of Barcelona and the Port of Shanghai have strengthened in recent years. In July 2025, a preliminary agreement was signed between the two port authorities, leading to a technical visit by a delegation from Shanghai in September 2025. This delegation, led by Wang Haijian, Vice President and Operations Manager of the SIPG, aimed to advance the development of the Green Shipping and Digital Corridor between the two ports. During this meeting, working discussions were held on the growing trade and logistics exchanges between China and Europe, and a tour of the Ebro-Chery facilities in the free zone was conducted.
As part of the current visit, the Auto Terminal vehicle terminal was also inspected to continue the ongoing work on establishing the Green Shipping and Digital Corridor between the two ports.
The signing of the new agreement and the institutional visit solidify the position of the Port of Barcelona as a Euro-Mediterranean logistics center and strengthen connections to one of the most significant ports and economic centers in the world.
