Decline in cross-border freight traffic in the USA
Apr 23, 2026 at 12:22 PMThe Italian logistics provider FS Logistix and Anita, the national association of road transport companies (Associazione Nazionale Imprese Trasporti Automobilistici), have launched the ‚Rail4Truck‘ freight train connection between Bologna and Marcianise.
The service aims to respond to rising fuel costs and create an alternative in Italy’s north-south transport. The direct train operated by Mercitalia Intermodal connects Bologna Interporto with Maddaloni Marcianise and can be extended to Catania Bicocca with a single booking.
Four round trips are planned per week, with departures in both directions. According to the company, approximately 200 l of fuel can be saved per truck, as well as about 55 t of CO₂ emissions avoided.
Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix, emphasised the role of the connection for stable supply chains. Anita sees it as a contribution to the development of combined transport. The service offers predictable transit times and aims to reduce dependence on road transport. This initiative comes against the backdrop of rising diesel prices, which significantly increased in March 2026.
