Apr 13, 2026 at 1:37 PMAir Charter Service (ACS) recently organized the transport of 36 Huskies and their handlers from Oslo, Norway, to Anchorage, Alaska. The dogs participated in the prestigious Iditarod sled dog race, which spans over 1,000 miles and is known as „the last great race.“
Dan Morgan-Evans, Group Cargo Director at ACS, explained the challenges associated with transporting the animals. „We were contacted by a group of Norwegian participants who wanted to take part in the Iditarod. Transporting such a large number of dogs required finding an airline willing to operate the flight directly without stops to minimize transit time for the Huskies,“ Morgan-Evans stated.
A Boeing B757-200F was selected for the transport, as it met the requirements. The total weight of the cargo was less than 2 tons, as it consisted solely of the dogs and their equipment, including food, vitamins, harnesses, and camping gear.
Logistical Challenges and Preparations
Another obstacle was the need to organize additional personnel in Oslo for handling the animals. This included ensuring an outdoor area where the dogs could move around before the flight. Additionally, all necessary health documents had to be obtained, including 36 passports, 36 rabies vaccination certificates, 36 health certificates, and 36 CDC permits for U.S. customs.
To ensure a smooth process, a member of the cargo team accompanied the aircraft along with the dog handlers and the Huskies. In Anchorage, access to the airport grounds was secured, allowing the handlers to drive directly to the aircraft and load the dogs for the short onward transport.
After the successful race, the Huskies were flown on another charter flight, this time with a McDonnell Douglas MD-83F, to Seattle before being returned to Europe on a regular flight.
