Changi airport – with new freight flight to Sydney – performs well in Q1
Apr 17, 2026 at 8:37 AMThe ÖBB recorded a positive development in passenger transport in 2025, while freight transport suffers from the effects of economic conditions. According to the current balance sheet of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), a total of 559 million passengers used the company’s buses and trains, representing an increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year. The new Koralmbahn, which was put into operation at the end of 2025, attracts about 7,000 passengers daily, as the company reports.
Financial results and challenges
The total revenues of the ÖBB increased by 8%, while the earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose by 4%. However, earnings before taxes (EBT) fell by 40% to 68.1 million euros. According to the company, freight transport is experiencing declining demand due to the industrial recession. Transport performance in this sector fell by 4% to 26.2 billion net ton-kilometers, and it recorded a negative result of -135.5 million euros. The ÖBB has initiated measures to increase competitiveness in freight transport.
Andreas Matthä (pictured left), CEO of the ÖBB, commented on the results: “Considering the difficult economic situation, we have managed to cope well with the results of 2025. I see the continued increase in passenger numbers as a positive sign.”
