Cargo flights to China from Teesside
Mar 3, 2026 at 1:11 PMUnited European Car Carriers (UECC) has expanded its fleet with a new order for two environmentally friendly Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). The two ships will be built at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing and are expected to increase capacity and flexibility in European short-sea transport. With this order, the total number of ships under construction rises to four.
Technological Advances and Environmental Aspects
The new PCTCs will be equipped with a capacity of 3,000 CEU each and are set to feature modern, multi-fuel hybrid propulsion systems. This technology aims to optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. According to Glenn Edvardsen, CEO of UECC, the new ships represent a significant advancement in safety, efficiency, and environmental performance. The vessels will also feature a ballast-free design that further reduces fuel consumption and includes real-time emissions monitoring systems.
The ships will have nine decks and offer a stern ramp with a capacity of 160 tons. This allows for the transport of a variety of vehicles as well as heavy and oversized cargo that typically falls outside the standard PCTC segment. The ships are scheduled for delivery in early 2028.
Focus on Safety and Digital Solutions
A central concern in the development of the new ships was safety. Edvardsen emphasizes that a robust safety concept has been implemented, enhancing fire-fighting capabilities and integrating expanded monitoring and response options. The vessels are designed to not only meet current regulations but also to consider future safety standards.
Additionally, an integrated digital system will be implemented to optimize operations and support decision-making. These digital solutions aim to enhance performance and increase transparency throughout the vessels‘ lifecycle.
With this new order, UECC will have a total of nine dual-fuel LNG and multi-fuel hybrid PCTCs in its fleet, which have been in operation since 2016. These ships are also designed to accommodate future technological innovations and alternative fuels.
Commitment to Sustainability
UECC is committed to reducing environmental impact by participating in initiatives such as the „Sail for Change“ program. This program enables vehicle manufacturers to achieve significant savings in Scope 3 emissions. By utilizing biofuels in its fleet, UECC can exceed the requirements of the EU FuelEU Maritime directive while minimizing exposure to the EU Emissions Trading System.
