Jul 8, 2026 at 11:50 AMSeaspan Corporation has announced an enhanced collaboration with AP Moller – Maersk, aimed at increasing the efficiency of its time-chartered fleet. This deepening of the partnership, which has existed for over 20 years, seeks to achieve improvements in fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, operational flexibility, and emissions reduction, as stated by the company.
Modernization program
As part of a program, 18 vessels that are long-term chartered to Maersk will be modernized. A key measure is the development of retrofit solutions for four ships with a capacity of 13,000 TEU each. According to the company, this initiative is considered one of the most significant modernization projects for the joint time-charter fleet of Seaspan and Maersk.
The planned retrofits include several technical adjustments. These involve the installation of a shaft generator designed to reduce auxiliary fuel consumption, as well as performance optimization of the main engine. Additionally, a new high-efficiency propeller will be installed, and a pre-twist device will be added to enhance propulsion efficiency. Furthermore, the vessels will also be prepared for future emissions regulations regarding CO₂ capture. The total investment volume of the project amounts to 75 million US dollars, according to the company.
