Jun 18, 2026 at 7:29 AMInterferry, the international association of the ferry industry, has urged the authorities of the European Union and its member states to take measures to implement the new Entry/Exit System (EES) regulations. In light of the traffic jams during the May holidays, the association warns in a statement that without immediate adjustments and improved communication with passengers, the upcoming high season in summer could be severely disrupted.
Delays on ferry routes
According to reports from various Interferry members, significant delays are occurring on ferry connections across Europe. The systems for verifying compliance with EES requirements are not adequately implemented, which is affecting operations. The EES rules, which have been in effect since April 10 for the entry of individuals from third countries into the EU, have already led to significant disruptions at European ports, according to Interferry. Maritime operators must manage a variety of travel forms, including pedestrians, cars, buses, and freight transport. This complex operational reality complicates the implementation of digital border controls, which are designed as a „one-size-fits-all“ solution, according to the company. Such approaches could severely impact traffic flow and lead to frustration among passengers.
