Jun 18, 2026 at 10:13 AMThe development of the Aéropole Logistique et Fret at the southern French airport Montpellier Méditerranée (MPL) is taking shape. As announced at a press conference on June 16, 2026, the newly created logistics zone, with an investment volume of more than 150 million EUR, is expected to generate around 2,000 jobs by 2030. The airport, which has played a central role in the region’s air traffic connectivity since its opening in 1946, is now expanding its offerings in logistics and express shipping.
Strategic importance of the logistics zone
The Aéropole Logistique et Fret is designed as an economic hub that complements the existing infrastructure of the airport. The first buildings were already completed in 2024, including the facilities of DCB Logistic and Chronopost. Further openings are planned in the coming years, including those of Stef Transport and XPO, which are to be completed by 2026. A total of 100,000 m² of logistics space will be provided by 2030, making the Aéropole one of the most significant logistics projects in the region.
The creation of a new road connection, for which technical studies are currently being conducted, is expected to further enhance the attractiveness of the entire region. Construction work is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.
Partnerships and investments
The project is supported by a variety of public and private partners. Institutional actors include the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), the prefecture of the Occitanie region, and the Hérault department. On the private side, over 15 companies have invested in the logistics zone, including well-known firms such as Black Pearl Group and DCB Logistics. These partnerships are crucial for achieving the ambitious goals of the Aéropole.
The logistics zone aims not only to support existing companies but also to attract new players from the logistics sector. This will be achieved by creating a modern logistics and express shipping hub that meets the demands of the last mile.
Sustainability in focus
Another aspect of the project is ecological responsibility. In collaboration with the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels d’Occitanie, a comprehensive ecological compensation plan is being implemented to ensure the preservation and restoration of natural habitats over a period of 50 years. This initiative demonstrates the airport’s commitment to aligning economic development with ecological requirements.
Overall, the Aéropole Logistique et Fret represents a significant step in the economic development of the region by creating jobs and improving logistical connectivity.
