Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. („K“ LINE) has recently signed contracts with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. to build four car carriers that can be powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas). These ships, which have a capacity of 1,380 vehicles, are intended for „K“ Line European Sea Highway Services GmbH (KESS), the European subsidiary of „K“ LINE, as the company reports.
According to „K“ LINE, the car carriers are designed for short-sea transport in Europe and aim to facilitate the transport of small pieces. A feature of the ships is their adaptation to the size restrictions imposed by some European ports for imported vehicles. „K“ LINE expects that the technical specifications of the ships will provide KESS with a competitive advantage in the European short-sea shipping market.
Technical details and environmental aspects
The ships will be equipped with straight stern ramps that offer a loading capacity of 60 tons. This enables KESS to transport not only passenger cars but also heavy and oversized cargo. Another aspect of the new ships is the use of LNG as fuel for the dual-fuel propulsion system. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25% to 30% and nearly eliminate sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, which contribute to air pollution, compared to conventional ships that use heavy fuel oil. Furthermore, „K“ LINE plans to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire corporate group by also considering the use of biodiesel and bio-LNG or liquefied biomethane.
