Caditan is Columbia’s “Cadet of the Year”

The Cyprus-based Columbia Group has named Martina Claire Caditan as „Cadet of the Year,“ recognizing the success of its cadet development program. This award was presented during a ceremonial event at the Manila location of Columbia Shipmanagement. Caditan, who joined the program in 2020, has undergone comprehensive training over the past four years, which included academic education, leadership development, and practical onboard experience. The graduate of the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific describes her time in the program as one of the most formative periods of her life. „Life at sea has taught me resilience, adaptability, teamwork, and professionalism,“ she stated. She emphasized that she received support from mentors and officers at Columbia, especially during challenging times that involved self-doubt and homesickness. Caditan highlighted that the accessibility and support of the mentors were crucial for her development.

In light of the growing challenges in the maritime sector, particularly regarding crew shortages and the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, the Columbia Group has recently enhanced its training program for cadets. This program aims to provide a stronger governance structure for cadet operations and to promote the support and career development of cadets from recruitment to the officer level.

Caditan aims to continue her career in the industry, with the long-term goal of becoming a captain. Simona Toma, Chief of Maritime HR at Columbia Group, congratulated Caditan on her award and emphasized that she approached every phase of her development with professionalism and determination.

Caditan’s appointment as „Cadet of the Year“ underscores Columbia Group’s efforts to nurture the next generation of professionals in the maritime industry and to actively address the challenges facing the sector.
