May 29, 2026 at 1:27 PMThe Deutsche Bahn (DB) has begun construction of a new freight train line between Offenburg and Müllheim in the Markgräflerland region. This measure is part of the Karlsruhe – Basel connection and the European freight corridor Rotterdam – Genoa. The construction of two additional tracks along the A5 motorway is intended to increase capacity for freight transport. In the future, four tracks will be available on the Rhine Valley Railway, which will enable an increase in train frequency, as the company reports.
According to DB, the relocation of freight traffic to the new line has several advantages: On the one hand, freight traffic from Freiburg and the surrounding municipalities will be shifted, resulting in approximately 50,000 fewer freight trains passing through the city each year. This will lead to a reduction in noise and improve the quality of life for residents. On the other hand, the new line will create space for additional connections in local and long-distance transport, which is expected to make operations on the Rhine Valley Railway more stable.
With a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony near the municipality of Reute, the official start of construction work was announced. Representatives from Deutsche Bahn, the federal government, and the state were present. „We are creating more space for the growing freight traffic, while simultaneously strengthening passenger transport and noticeably relieving local residents from rail noise,“ said Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO.
