Apr 27, 2026 at 9:20 AMThe Port of Strasbourg and the Upper Rhine ports have presented concrete approaches to climate change adaptation as part of the „Crane“ and „Clim’Ability Care“ projects. At the closing colloquium in Strasbourg (France), representatives from the ports, academia, and politics emphasized the significant importance of joint measures for a resilient inland shipping sector.
The „Crane Project“ analyzed climate-related risks such as heat, low water levels, flooding, and storms over three years. The basis was data on past events as well as projections up to 2100. It became evident that particularly port railways, handling areas, and personnel are affected, while other infrastructure remains more robust.
Around 500 measures were evaluated, including emergency plans, investments in resilient facilities, and the expansion of rail capacities. The goal is to ensure operational capability even under extreme conditions. The collaboration of the ports along the Rhine is thus further strengthened.
