Apr 20, 2026 at 7:54 AMBefore international meetings aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, discussions begin: From April 20 to 24, 2026, the session of the Intersessional Working Group of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will take place, followed by the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) from April 27 to May 1.
Delaine McCullough, President of the Clean Shipping Coalition and Director of the Shipping Program at Ocean Conservancy, emphasizes the urgency of these meetings. She urges IMO member states to clarify crucial details regarding the components of the NZF and the guidelines for life cycle assessment in the coming days. This clarity is necessary to meet the requirements that were called for by some member states during MEPC ES.2 in October 2025.
Guidelines for implementation
McCullough highlights that member states should seize the opportunity to develop key guidelines. These include, among other things, incentives for early movers and the measurement of emissions from various fuels. These measures are essential to enable the introduction of the NZF later this year.
