Contract signed for eight LST 100
Mar 3, 2026 at 1:24 PMThe British air freight provider European Cargo confirmed on March 3, 2026, that it will establish a new operational base at Teesside Airport Business Park. This multi-million investment strengthens the airport’s (MME) position as an important logistics hub in northern England. As part of the agreement, five weekly freight flights will be added to a strategically important trade center.
The new connection enables the transport of up to 375 tons of freight per week and opens faster, more direct export routes for British manufacturers and businesses. The European Cargo base is also expected to contribute to the creation of local jobs and solidify Teesside as a significant node for global logistics.
Phil Forster, Managing Director of Teesside Airports, commented on the agreement: „This is a transformative contract for our airport and another important step in establishing Teesside as a leading center for the aviation and logistics industry in the UK.“ He emphasized that securing a new freight base and direct connections to China represents a crucial moment that significantly strengthens the airport’s commercial offering.
Iain Edwards, Chief Operating Officer of European Cargo, stated: „We are very excited to establish this new operational base at Teesside International Airport, which marks a significant advancement in our mission to connect British businesses with global markets.“ The five weekly flights provide much-needed capacity and enable faster and more reliable exports for manufacturers in northern England.
The new connection will be operated with a fleet of Airbus A340-600 long-haul freighters, which can transport up to 76 tons of freight. Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen described the announcement as extremely significant for Teesside Airport and the local economy. He emphasized that European Cargo’s decision to establish a new base and launch freight flights is a clear sign of confidence in the future of the airport and the region.
The agreement with European Cargo builds on several private sector investments at Teesside Airport over the past year. These include the opening of a £13.5 million (€15.5 million) maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility by Willis Aviation Services Limited, as well as the development of two aircraft painting facilities by Airbourne Colours.
