Nov 25, 2021 at 6:54 PMThe Austrian logistics provider Gebrüder Weiss is organizing a rail transport of 12,600 LED streetlights and light poles to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, for the lighting company Zumtobel. The transport of 80 containers is taking place via the new Silk Road. The railway was preferred over shipping as a mode of transport due to COVID-19.
(Ulaanbaatar/Dornbirn/Lauterach) The transport and logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss has transported 12,600 LED streetlights and light poles to Mongolia via the railway route of the New Silk Road for the lighting company Zumtobel. Over 80 containers were delivered on time from Austria to the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar within twelve months. This is part of an infrastructure project by the Mongolian government, which commissioned the Zumtobel Group two years ago to supply and install streetlights.
Custom-made cargo securing
The risk of transport damage due to strong acceleration forces during rail transport was eliminated with a special cargo securing system in the container. During the approximately 30-day transit time, the nine-meter-long poles were securely fixed in specially made wooden frames that prevented the cargo from shifting in the containers. Franco Ravazzolo, Head of Projects & Break Bulk at Gebrüder Weiss: “We recommended the rail option via the New Silk Road to the customer Zumtobel because we wanted to avoid problems that could arise due to delays in sea transport as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Alexander Rosa, Head of Sales Processes at Zumtobel Austria: “The experience with complex project transports by rail was one of the reasons we chose Gebrüder Weiss. The recommendation for rail transport proved to be spot on. With the lighting project in Mongolia, we have opened up a new market that promises further potential in the future.”
