Sustainable transport between Switzerland and Italy
Jul 16, 2026 at 2:32 PMThe Norwegian RoRo shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has received the Arctic Tern, the first ship of the new Shaper Class series. This delivery represents a significant step in the company’s fleet modernization. The Arctic Tern is equipped with dual-fuel technology and is ready for the use of methanol, which increases operational efficiency and meets the growing demands of customers for sustainable logistics solutions.
Initial deployments and strategic importance
The Arctic Tern will be operated by EUKOR Car Carriers, a joint venture of Hyundai Motor Group and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. Xavier Leroi, COO Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen and CEO of EUKOR Car Carriers, emphasizes: “As the first ship of our new Shaper Class series, it reflects our commitment to investing in the future of shipping.” With increased transport capacity and improved fuel efficiency, the ship is designed to meet the changing needs of customers while supporting the transition to lower-emission operations. The Arctic Tern is expected to be deployed between Asia and Europe immediately after delivery and is set to conduct its first methanol bunkering shortly after handover.
The delivery also marks the beginning of a new naming tradition for the Shaper Class series from Wallenius Wilhelmsen. The names of the ships are inspired by birds known for their remarkable journeys. The Arctic Tern, recognized for the longest migration among bird species, symbolizes the connection of markets and the creation of value for customers.
Collaboration and technical expertise
Behind the Arctic Tern lies a history of partnership and collaboration. Wallenius Marine was responsible for site management and the provision of the ship, while Wilhelmsen Ship Management prepared the ship for commercial operation and will take over responsibility for ship management after delivery. Håkon Lenz, President and CEO of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, highlights: “With the Arctic Tern and the Shaper Class, we are setting new standards in shipping.”
Leroi adds that the collaboration between Wallenius and Wilhelmsen has been at the center of the project from the beginning. Johan Mattsson, CEO of Wallenius Marine, emphasizes the complexity of the newbuilding project and the necessity of close cooperation and technical expertise throughout all phases of construction.
The Arctic Tern will contribute to strengthening Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s fleet not only through its dual-fuel capability but also through technologies that enhance operational performance and efficiency. It plays an important role in supporting future growth and meeting changing customer and regulatory requirements.
