Jul 10, 2026 at 8:04 AMShanghai has achieved second place in the current Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index (ISCDI) 2026, published in collaboration between the Baltic Exchange and the Xinhua News Agency. This positions the city as the second most important shipping hub in the world, according to the Baltic Exchange, while Singapore retains the top position for the thirteenth consecutive time.
The ISCDI evaluates leading international shipping centers based on an analysis of port factors, professional business services, and the overall environment. Singapore scored 99.32 out of 100, reflecting the city’s strategic location and established maritime services in finance, insurance, and legal expertise, according to the Baltic Exchange. Additionally, Singapore plays a significant role in the development of alternative fuels and technological innovations.
Shanghai has made continuous progress in recent years, surpassing London, which currently ranks third. With a score of 84.27, Shanghai has steadily improved its position since the introduction of the ISCDI in 2014, when it was ranked seventh. This development underscores the growing importance of Shanghai as a global center for containerized trade, according to the Baltic Exchange.
London follows in third place with a score of 81.80, while Hong Kong and Dubai occupy the fourth and fifth positions, with scores of 80.87 and 77.13, respectively. These three shipping centers have consistently remained among the top five over the past nine years.
