Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Buses has commenced the production of trucks and buses at its new manufacturing site in Zárate, Argentina. The facility, built on a 20-hectare site north of Buenos Aires, includes the production of the Atego and Accelo models as well as various bus chassis. Additionally, the industrial center houses a logistics center for spare parts and a plant for the refurbishment of used truck and bus spare parts. The investment in the new site amounts to 110 million USD.
Strategic importance of the new plant
Achim Puchert, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, emphasized the significance of the new plant for the company’s history in Argentina. „The opening of our new plant in Zárate marks an important new chapter for Mercedes-Benz Trucks in Argentina,“ said Puchert. The site allows for a complete focus on the production of trucks and buses and strengthens Argentina’s role in Daimler Truck’s global production network.
The location of the plant in Zárate offers logistical advantages, as it is near a port and on a major transport route. This enables efficient logistics and cost benefits. The new plant will produce the truck models Atego and Accelo as well as bus chassis with front and rear engines. Furthermore, the plant is the first in Argentina to specialize in the refurbishment of spare parts. To date, over 9,600 parts, including transmissions and engines, have been delivered.
The logistics center for spare parts, which will be inaugurated in December 2024, enables nationwide delivery within 24 to 48 hours.
In the year of the new site’s opening, Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Buses is also celebrating an anniversary: 75 years ago, the first production plant outside Germany was opened in Virrey del Pino. The LO 3500 was the first truck built in Argentina and served as the basis for the first bus in the market.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Buses is headquartered in Munro, Buenos Aires Province, and operates a training center as well as a network of 45 service centers across the country. In 2025, the company held a market share of 33.4% in trucks and 61.3% in buses in Argentina.
