May 6, 2026 at 9:22 AMSilk Way West Airlines celebrates the tenth anniversary of its flights to Japan, highlighting the importance of the Japanese market within its international network. The Azerbaijani airline has expanded its route network in Japan since launching its first connection from Baku to Komatsu in 2016, now also serving Kansai and Narita airports. Currently, Silk Way West Airlines operates two weekly flights to Japan, representing a vital cargo link between Japan and the airline’s international network.
Over the past ten years, the airline has conducted approximately 1,300 flights to and from Japan, transporting more than 145,000 tons of cargo. These figures illustrate both the volume of operations and the airline’s commitment to the Japanese market.
Growth of the air freight market in Japan
The anniversary celebrations coincide with a period of growth in the Japanese air freight market, which is expected to be about 12% higher in volume in 2025 compared to 2024. Japan plays a crucial role as one of the leading air freight hubs in Asia, connecting regional and intercontinental trade flows. This is supported by advanced infrastructure, frequent international connections, and a strong focus on high-quality, time-sensitive goods.
Silk Way West Airlines utilizes its hub in Baku to facilitate the onward connection for shipments to Japan via regional markets. This eases the flow of cargo between Japan and destinations in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.
The anniversary celebration took place at the Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo and was attended by partners, representatives from civil aviation authorities, embassies, and government officials.
Zaur Akhundov, President of Silk Way Group, commented on the occasion: “This ten-year milestone reflects the strong partnership that Silk Way West Airlines has built in Japan over the past decade. We greatly value the trust of our customers, partners, and stakeholders in Japan and remain committed to strengthening this collaboration and supporting cargo connections between our regions in the coming years.”
Japan remains a strategically important market for Silk Way West Airlines and is an essential part of the airline’s broader vision to enhance trade relations between East and West via Baku.
