May 8, 2026 at 9:38 AMThe resumption of rail freight transport is the focus of discussions at this year’s annual conference of the European Rail Freight Association (ERFA), which took place on May 6 in Brussels. More than 120 participants, including representatives from European institutions, national governments, railway companies, as well as customers and industry representatives, gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities of rail freight transport.
Requirements for rail freight transport
The conference addressed the need for cross-border cooperation and the improvement of capacities in rail freight transport. A central concern was the establishment of equal competitive conditions for road and rail transport operators. Participants emphasized that a customer-oriented approach is crucial for the revival of rail freight transport.
Despite existing economic and operational challenges, rail freight transport remains, according to ERFA, an essential component of the European transport strategy. It contributes to alleviating road congestion, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and supports the achievement of decarbonization goals. Additionally, rail freight transport plays an important role in maintaining functioning supply chains and facilitating military mobility.
