May 4, 2026 at 3:32 PMUnited Cargo has promptly initiated relief efforts following the devastating Typhoon Sinlaku, which struck the Northern Mariana Islands on April 14, 2026. Within 48 hours after the storm, the infrastructure in Tinian, Saipan, and Guam was severely impacted. Approximately 43,000 people were affected by power outages, water damage, and the destruction of buildings. In this critical situation, United Cargo began organizing emergency transports and relief supplies in collaboration with its partners in Community and Market Impact.
Restoration of flight operations
„We immediately resumed our regular daily service between Guam and Saipan as soon as conditions allowed on April 20, 2026. On that day and on April 22, we organized additional flights to deliver urgently needed relief supplies to those affected,“ explains Ben Scott, Cargo Sales Account Executive at United Airlines. The needed supplies include drinking water, generators, cleaning supplies, and medical items. Additionally, hundreds of responders were flown into the affected areas, and tourists from the region were evacuated. „It will take some time before the islands can reopen for tourism. As the leading airline in the region, we are doing everything we can to support the affected communities,“ Scott added.
United Cargo is working closely with various relief organizations that are currently providing emergency shelter, medical care, and hot meals for the thousands of displaced island residents. Key partners in Community and Market Impact include the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, and Airlink. Furthermore, a campaign called „Miles on a Mission“ has been launched to continue providing necessary support and rebuilding efforts.
Fundraising and recognition
United Airlines has committed to doubling all donations made by May 31, 2026, up to a total of $75,000, to amplify the impact of support for nonprofit partners in Micronesia.
For its commitment to emergency and disaster relief, United Airlines was recently awarded the Silver Halo Award for Best Emergency/Disaster Response Initiative at the Halo Awards Gala 2026 in Palm Springs, California. This award is among the most prestigious honors in corporate social engagement in the United States.
Pulin Thakkar, Senior Manager for Community and Market Impact at United Airlines, emphasized at the event: „We continue to focus on taking a leading role in disaster relief—by harnessing the strength of our nonprofit and corporate partners and, above all, the many employees who step up in critical moments.“ He praised partners like Airlink, with whom the airline has helped an estimated 23 million people worldwide since the partnership began in 2010. During this time, nearly 5,000 responders and over 1 ton of relief supplies, ranging from medical supplies to food and water filters, have been transported to crisis areas by United Airlines.
