Jul 13, 2026 at 8:11 AMInterport Global (IPG) has appointed Anthony Donald as the new Chief Executive Officer to lead Project Velocity. This long-term investment initiative has a volume of approximately 12 billion EUR and aims to develop Central Queensland into a significant hub for freight, logistics, and trade. Donald brings over 20 years of experience in managing maritime, logistics, and large infrastructure projects, including his previous role as CEO of TasPorts, as well as senior positions at Port of Melbourne and Melbourne Airport.
Donald’s appointment comes at a time when IPG’s plans to invest in infrastructure for ports, roads, rail, cold storage, industry, and renewable energy are gaining momentum. These investments are intended to unlock new export opportunities, strengthen supply chain resilience, and promote long-term economic growth in the region.
Strategic development in Gladstone
As part of Project Velocity, IPG plans to construct an inland port and rail terminal in Calliope, a 48,000 m² cold and reefer container facility, and an industrial park for advanced manufacturing. Additionally, the infrastructure for renewable energy will be expanded, and shipping services to Asia will be enhanced. Donald emphasizes that Gladstone is strategically located to serve as an international freight center, particularly in light of growing trade volumes and the associated challenges for existing freight and logistics networks in Australia.
“Gladstone is one of the best deep-water ports in Australia and is well positioned to efficiently receive these mega cargo ships (Ultra Large Container Vessels),” Donald stated. He highlights the port’s ability to seamlessly integrate with coastal shipping and rail infrastructure, making it a unique asset for development and productivity enhancement.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia’s trade in goods and services reached record highs in 2025, with exports increasing by 3.1% to 399.1 billion EUR and imports rising by 6.9% to 395 billion EUR.
Donald is described by Leon Allen, the Chairman of IPG, as someone who brings a rare combination of operational, strategic, and governance experience in the fields of ports, aviation, and large infrastructure. Allen emphasizes that Donald’s expertise and proven ability to drive change will create long-term value for the company.
“I look forward to working with the IPG team, the government, industry, and local stakeholders to realize the opportunities for Gladstone and Central Queensland,” Donald concluded.
