Jul 2, 2026 at 12:22 PMA new charging system at the port of Puttgarden is now operational and will support the daily ferry operations of Scandlines. With this new infrastructure, the shipping company can supply its ferries with shore power on both sides of the Fehmarn Belt, as it reports. A total of 11 kilometers of power cables have been laid from the substation in Burg to the ferry port to ensure the necessary connection capacity of 15 MW.
The installation of the charging tower has now been completed and put into operation. According to Scandlines, Puttgarden is now ready to supply the company’s ferries with electricity. A similar connection has been operational at the port of Rødby since March. This was introduced alongside the commissioning of the freight ferry „The Baltic Whale“ on the Puttgarden-Rødby route.
According to Scandlines, „The Baltic Whale“ is one of the largest ferries in the world that can be operated exclusively with shore power. The ability to charge the ferry in both Rødby and Puttgarden allows the charging time in each port to be reduced to 12 to 15 minutes. This enables Scandlines to increase the departures of the ferry from both ports.
