This is according to the latest data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), which provides information on freight activities between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The release offers an overview of the value of U.S. imports and exports, categorized by mode of transportation, commodity, and geographic location.
Growth of freight volumes
In April 2026, the total value of cross-border freight amounted to $150.8 billion. This represents a 19.4% increase compared to April 2025. Freight between the U.S. and Canada was valued at $64.8 billion, reflecting a 14.4% increase. The traffic between the U.S. and Mexico was even more pronounced, totaling $86.0 billion, with a growth of 23.4%.
The various modes of transportation also showed positive growth. Trucks transported goods worth $98.4 billion, marking an 18.8% increase from the previous year. Railroads recorded a 15.6% increase, carrying goods valued at $16.7 billion. Maritime transport also showed an increase: goods worth $9.7 billion were transported, representing a 33.2% rise.
Pipelines and air transport also contributed to the positive development: pipelines transported freight valued at $10.9 billion, which corresponds to a 22.3% increase. Air transport recorded an increase of 66.2% compared to April 2025, with a total value of $8.0 billion.
