Jun 24, 2026 at 9:11 AMThe Rio Brasil Terminal (RBT) in the port of Rio de Janeiro has put two new quay cranes into operation as part of its modernization measures. This acquisition is part of a program aimed at improving ship handling and efficiency at the terminal, as reported by the parent organization ICTSI. The new cranes, designed to handle larger vessels of up to 400 meters in length and a capacity of up to 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), are intended to optimize berth utilization and reduce turnaround times.
Expansion of capacities
With this recent investment, the number of quay cranes at RBT increases to a total of six. According to ICTSI, this measure comes in response to an increase in container volume at the port of Rio, which has been observed since 2023. This increase reflects the growth in Brazilian foreign trade and highlights the need to adapt the terminal’s infrastructure accordingly. The expansion of RBT aims to manage the rising trade volume and meet the demands of larger vessels that are increasingly calling at the East Coast of South America.
The modernization program includes not only the acquisition of new cranes but also the expansion and restructuring of storage yards, as well as the optimization of internal operational processes. These measures are intended to strengthen the port of Rio to support Brazilian foreign trade and the country’s logistics chain. The goal is to reduce bottlenecks at other ports.
