Gurkerl.at wins Austrian Logistics Award 2026

The Austrian Logistics Award 2026 was presented to the online supermarket Gurkerl.at. This marks the 18th award for the best logistics project in Austria. Gurkerl.at has set new standards in online grocery retail with a highly automated fulfillment solution. The project demonstrates how demanding food logistics can be efficiently and reliably organized even with increasing order volumes.

Innovative logistics solutions in competition

In addition to Gurkerl.at, Lidl Österreich with the project „Zero Emission Supply Chain“ and voestalpine Stahl with „wellDun“ also reached the finals of the best logistics projects 2026. These projects showcase the diversity and innovative strength in the Austrian logistics industry.

Gurkerl.at has developed its fulfillment center in Vienna into a highly automated, digitally controlled logistics system. The core of this solution consists of two AutoStore systems, which include over 36,000 containers, more than 200 robots, and four AI-supported robotic arms. A self-developed Warehouse Execution System manages incoming goods, inventory management, order picking, shipping, and route planning. Approximately 70 percent of all orders are processed fully automated, with an average processing time of about 30 minutes. The project illustrates how automation, robotics, and intelligent software can be combined in food logistics.

Finalists in detail

Lidl Österreich aims to gradually make the supply chain in retail emissions-free with its project „Zero Emission Supply Chain.“ For this purpose, electric trucks, charging infrastructure, energy supply, software, goods flows, and transport partners are integrated into a comprehensive system. Inbound and outbound traffic are intelligently combined, routes are digitally planned, and aligned with ranges, idle times, and loading windows. With its own charging infrastructure at distribution centers and already millions of kilometers driven electrically, Lidl demonstrates that emissions-free heavy goods logistics in retail is feasible.

The „wellDun“ project by voestalpine Stahl addresses a central challenge in the overseas transport of steel coils: the safe, economical, and sustainable stowage in ISO containers. The solution is based on specially developed corrugated cardboard with moisture-resistant adhesive and achieves a load capacity of 30 tons. It is patented, certified, quickly deployable, and flexible for different coil dimensions. With wellDun, more flexible round trips, fewer empty runs, and more efficient multimodal transport chains can be realized. Logistics costs per container decrease by 20%, while the CO₂ footprint is reduced by 90%.
