EU approves capacity regulation for freight trains
Jun 11, 2026 at 8:38 AMThe international air freight, supported by the member companies of AICAI (Associazione Italiana Corrieri Aerei Internazionali), DHL, FedEx, and UPS, plays a crucial role in Italy’s competitiveness in an increasingly globalized economy. According to a recent report by AICAI in collaboration with Milan’s Bocconi University (photo), the significance of these companies for Italian exports and the overall economy is evident. In 2024, the impact of international air freight companies on the national gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to be around €3.6 billion, while the total economic impact is valued at over €10.1 billion.
Economic importance of air freight
The three express service providers exported goods worth €24.4 billion last year. This accounts for 27.8% of total Italian exports transported by air. These figures illustrate how vital air freight is for the Italian export economy, which encompasses more than 120,000 companies and employs 4.37 million people in this sector. AICAI members not only provide fast transport solutions but also innovative logistics services that help exporters efficiently serve their international markets.
The results of the report were presented on June 10 at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy in Rome. The event provided a platform for discussing the role of international air freight companies, particularly express service providers, in export, businesses, and the competitiveness of the Italian system.
Future perspectives of air freight logistics
AICAI’s analysis shows that air freight not only makes a direct economic contribution but also supports numerous jobs. In total, over 44,000 jobs are secured through the direct, indirect, and induced effects of air freight activities. In an environment where speed, reliability, and global connections are crucial for economic success, air freight is becoming an increasingly strategic resource for the Italian economy. AICAI’s express service providers are at the forefront of creating efficient logistics solutions that facilitate international trade.
The presentation of the report also provides insights into future developments in air freight logistics and highlights how this industry can contribute to the further internationalization of Italian companies.
