Study on CO₂ border adjustment in Germany
Jun 5, 2026 at 10:12 AMRob Smeets has been appointed as the new CEO of the Port Authority of Antwerp-Bruges. The board of the port authority announced that Smeets will succeed Jacques Vandermeiren for a term of six years, who announced his resignation on April 14, 2026. The appointment follows a selection process in which a variety of candidates were evaluated by a committee consisting of board members. Rob Smeets was chosen as the most suitable candidate.
Long-standing experience in the port authority
Smeets is not unfamiliar with the Port Authority of Antwerp-Bruges. He has been working in various senior positions for over twenty years. Since 2014, he has led the tug services department, became Director of Nautical Operations in 2017, and has been a member of the executive committee as Chief Operations Officer (COO) since 2019. Following Vandermeiren’s resignation announcement, he took on the role of CEO on an interim basis.
With his extensive experience within the organization and his deep understanding of the port and its operations, Smeets is well-equipped to lead the port authority during a time of significant investments and geopolitical changes. The board is confident that he can guide the authority through the challenges facing the European industry.
Outlook on future development
Regarding his appointment, he stated:
“I am grateful to the board for their trust. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is well-positioned internationally and has excellent employees, customers, and partners. Together, we want to continue building a port that increases its influence, is ready for the challenges of tomorrow, and strengthens its position as a leading global port. I look forward to it.”
Johan Klaps, Chairman of the Board of the Port Authority, emphasized the importance of the swift appointment of a new CEO for the continuity of the organization.
“Rob knows the port authority and the port like no one else. He is a familiar face both within and outside the organization, knows our stakeholders well, and can reconcile different interests. Additionally, he has extensive experience in managing large budgets, investment programs, and change processes. In a time when delivery and execution are of utmost importance, we are convinced that Rob, with his pragmatic leadership style, is the right person to lead the Port Authority of Antwerp-Bruges.”
Dirk De fauw, Vice Chairman of the Board, highlighted that the selection process was conducted swiftly but thoroughly.
“The fact that so many individuals expressed interest in this role confirms the national and international appeal of the Port Authority of Antwerp-Bruges. Due to his experience, knowledge of the port, and leadership skills, Rob emerged as the strongest candidate in this process. I am confident that Rob, together with the board, the leadership team, the organization, and our customers, will make our port even stronger and prepare for a challenging future.”
